Utility RPE Liner, Built for Cost-First Containment

Everything Ponds Utility RPE is our budget-focused reinforced polyethylene liner for projects where cost control matters more than maximum long-term pond performance. It is fish and plant safe and NSF-61 certified, with high tear and puncture resistance relative to many traditional liner materials.

Quick fit rule: choose Utility RPE when the project is large-area, temporary, or budget-driven. For primary pond builds where long-term water-tight performance is critical, step up to our Premium RPE liners.

Choose Your Utility Option

  • Utility 24 (24 mil) — standard Utility RPE option; best balance of handling and durability in this category.
  • Utility 20 (20 mil) — lighter-duty option for temporary or lower-risk containment (special order / by request).
  • Utility 16 (16 mil) — lightest-duty option for short-term or tarp-style applications (special order / by request).

Important: thinner Utility options use thinner coating systems and can show minor moisture migration in some conditions. For decorative ponds, koi ponds, and installs where maximum water retention and lifespan are the priority, choose Premium RPE.

Performance Snapshot

Liner Thickness Positioning Best Use Cases Install Feel
Utility 24 24 mil RPE Core utility grade Large irrigation ponds, temporary ponds, budget projects More bendable than thicker RPE
Utility 20 20 mil RPE Lighter-duty utility Shorter-term and lower-risk containment Easy handling
Utility 16 16 mil RPE Entry utility option Temporary tarp-style and non-critical containment Most flexible / lightest

Utility grades are selected for project economics and practical containment needs. If your project is a permanent pond build, our recommendation is to upgrade to Premium UV / Tough / Extreme for better long-term water retention, UV durability, and puncture margin.

Why People Choose Utility RPE

  • Cost-effective option for large coverage areas.
  • High puncture and tear resistance compared with many traditional pond liner materials.
  • Lightweight material is easier to handle than EPDM in large sheet sizes.
  • Custom panel sizes available up to approximately 60,000 square feet.
  • North American made and NSF-61 certified for drinking water and organic farming applications.
  • Default roll width: manufactured in 12' wide rolls; off-the-roll discounts available when any liner is ordered in a 12' width.

Can be used in conjunction with our Pond Liner Underlay if installing over abrasive surfaces like concrete, small gravel, or rougher surfaces. Please note that large or sharp rocks should still be removed or covered before installing underlay. Order a sample of this liner here.

Best Uses

Utility RPE is commonly used for large irrigation ponds, temporary firefighter ponds, heavy-duty tarp applications, and other containment projects where budget is a primary decision factor.

For permanent ornamental ponds, koi ponds, and high-importance water retention projects, we strongly recommend our Premium RPE liners.

Utility RPE Vs Premium RPE

Utility RPE (24 standard; 16/20 by request) Premium RPE (30 / 36 / 40)
✓ Lower upfront material cost ✓ Higher long-term durability and puncture margin
✓ Good fit for temporary and budget-driven jobs ✓ Better fit for permanent pond applications
✓ Lightweight handling in large formats ✓ Stronger all-around waterproof performance
✕ Thinner coatings may allow minor moisture transmission in some conditions ✓ Designed for long-term pond reliability
✕ Not our first recommendation for decorative or fish ponds ✓ First-choice recommendation for decorative and fish ponds

Calculating Liner Size

Post-Excavation: the most accurate method is to measure exactly where the liner will sit, following the contours of the excavation from anchor edge to anchor edge.

Pre-Excavation quick estimate:
Estimated Liner Length = 1–2' for anchoring + max depth + max length + max depth + 1–2' for anchoring
Estimated Liner Width = 1–2' for anchoring + max depth + max width + max depth + 1–2' for anchoring

Packaging & Installation

Utility RPE liners are manufactured in long rolls that are 12 feet wide. To create a custom size, we heat-weld two or more strips together to form high-quality seams. Liners under 150 lb typically ship boxed via UPS Ground; larger orders ship on a pallet by freight truck.

For installation, place the liner in one corner and unroll in the long direction first. After unrolling, pull across the width with enough helpers for the panel size (roughly one person for every 12 feet of liner is a good guideline). Smooth and pleat as needed, then leave at least 2 feet of extra edge for proper anchoring.

Once in place, cover the liner with water and/or protective fill (sand, clean gravel, or rock) where appropriate to improve long-term performance and appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

+ Is Utility RPE good for all ponds?
It can be used for many containment jobs, but for decorative and fish ponds where long-term water-tight reliability is critical, Premium RPE is the better choice.
+ What does “moisture migration” mean?
In thinner utility-grade liners, trace moisture movement (sometimes called “weeping”) can occur in certain conditions. This is one reason we recommend Premium RPE for high-priority ornamental and fish pond projects.
+ Which Utility thickness should I pick?
Utility 24 is the default recommendation. Utility 20 and 16 are for lighter-duty or temporary applications where lower upfront cost is the priority.
+ Is Utility RPE fish and plant safe?
Yes. Utility RPE is NSF-61 certified and made from high-quality raw materials suitable for many water containment applications.
+ Do I need underlayment?
Use underlayment when installing over abrasive or rocky subgrade. Clean, smooth soil may not require it.
+ Can I order custom sizes?
Yes. Utility RPE can be produced in large custom panel sizes up to approximately 60,000 square feet.

Warranty & Important Notes

  • Covered installs (water, soil, rock, or other protective cover) have significantly better long-term UV life than fully exposed installs.
  • As a general guide, covered Utility RPE can provide long service life; fully exposed installs have shorter life expectancy.
  • Warranty excludes damage from improper installation, sharp subgrade puncture, machinery/animal/ice damage, or catastrophic events.
  • If you want stronger long-term protection for pond-specific use, choose Premium RPE.

"The project seems to have gone well! I'm still working on it and haven't taken pictures of it in the latest stage (need to!) but I'm happy with the results so far."

The Pond liner installation “Went beautifully! Great products by you folks.  will come back again when I do the next pond.

C.Hanson, Maryland, RPE 40

“The pond liner is fantastic.  We were losing about four inches a day before the liner. Now it is always at the right level."

D.Lippert, Ontario, quietnature.ca, RPE Pond Liner, 30mil Laminated

"The liner holds up well to the moose traffic. It's a great place for birds and other wildlife to get water during the summer. It's amazing what a person can build with a shovel and some plumbing and a good pump (and lots of rocks!)."

- Lyle.G, Idaho, RPE 24

“The 30mil liner RPE went very well.  It was very easy to mold to the pond and is holding up well as I have several large turtles in it. I will have another pond to set up later this year & will be ordering another on from you

- J. Dabbert, California, RPE 30

"The project went great. The liner was good to work with: light and easy to bend around the shelves” -

- E.Norris, Nova Scotia, RPE 24

Rain water collection liner
Rain water collection liner

“My project was simple. I needed a dry riverbed in my backyard. It holds water when we have a good rain (New Mexico ? lol ). I can recycle it with a small pump to water plants and shrubs or put the pump in and looks like a running steam.”

- N.Kelly, Idaho, RPE 30mil Laminated

“It took a little finagling but the liner material was pliable enough to fold into those sharp corners with much extra bulk.  We used interlocking textured tread on the bottom since as soon as we started working with the water we realized the bottom was a bit slippery (to be honest we may have installed the liner wrong side up).” - C.Miller, San Francisco, 30mil Laminated
