Features

  • Acts as a protection layer below or above pond liner

  • Helps prevent punctures or abrasion wear to pond liners when lining with rough surfaces

  • Works great on top of a liner to create higher friction, protected surface for placing sand or rock on top of the liner

  • Seams are usually simply overlapped

  • Stabilizes the ground beneath the liner, helping to prevent 'over-stretching' of the liner.

Sizing-underlayment-for-ponds_2

We recommend underlay be used in any pond installation where the liner is being placed over any substrate that may contain rocks or other semi-sharp/rough objects.  This is especially important when using EPDM rubber liners since EPDM is not as puncture resistant as some other materials like RPE (reinforced polyethylene).  With RPE (reinforced polyethylene) liners, there is slightly more leeway with whether or not an underlayment is required. If the base is pure sand with no rocks whatsoever, then you may be able to get away without an underlayment.  However, if going over a soil or gravel substrate, then you'll definitely want to use at least one layer of geotextile underlayment between the substrate and your pond liner.  Sometimes people will put down a thin layer of sand instead of fitting a proper underlay.  While this might work in the short term, it has been shown that overtime as the pond settles from the weight of the water, the sand can shift and pack down, revealing rocks or sharp objects that were originally covered.  There's nothing worse than a leaking pond, so do it right the first time to avoid costly fixes in the future!

Pond underlayment comes in 15' wide pieces and can be cut up to fit into any size pond.  For example, for a 30' x 30' pond, you would need a 15' x 60' piece of underlayment, cut into two 15' x 30' pieces laid side by side.  The edges can be overlapped a little bit to prevent gaps.  If desired, you can "tack" sheets of underlayment together by slightly melting the two sheet together.  This can be done with a heat welding gun, or a butane torch - just make sure not to overheat or burn the underlayment or liner!

Geo will float if not weighted down.

This product is not NSF-61 certified as the small fibers that make up the geo could possibly break off and float to the surface.

  • PLEASE NOTE: We can only fit 1500 square feet of underlayment in our largest box for UPS (15' x 100' long). For any orders between 15' x 100' and 15' x 180', the underlayment may be split into two boxes. If this is a problem, please let us know and we can ship freight in a single piece, but there will be an extra charge. Orders over 15' x 180' (150 lbs+)will go freight free shipping
