Everything Ponds Premium Liners

Everything Ponds Premium Pond Liners have high puncture and tear resistance, being around 2 to 4 times stronger than traditional EPDM, PVC, or HDPE liners. Additionally, Premium Liners boast high UV resistance and are not susceptible to degradation when exposed to chemicals such as fertilizer nitrates and hydrocarbons. One of the most significant benefits of our Premium Liners is that each liner is custom-made to your exact size. The regular strength Premium RPE liner can be produced in single panels up to approximately 60,000 square feet, while the Premium Plus EIA liner can be  produced up to 30,000 sqft.

EP Premium Liners are Available in two material options: Premium and Premium Plus.

1. Premium Liner - 30 mil laminated RPE (Reinforced polyethylene)

The EP Premium Liner is a North American-made, 30 mil Laminated RPE liner (reinforced polyethylene). It weighs approximately one-third of a traditional EPDM rubber liner, making it significantly easier to move, handle, and install, particularly for larger panels. While rubber liners often require seaming multiple pieces on site, an RPE liner can be manufactured as a single panel up to 60,000 sqft. The laminated coating provides superior UV resistance and permeability ratings when compared to conventional RPE liners available on the market.

What is Special About a Laminated RPE?

The EP Premium RPE liner is similar to our standard RPE liner, except that it has a clear 6mil laminated coating on one side. This coating serves several important purposes. Firstly, it greatly enhances UV resistance, which is an issue for some conventional pond liners. Typically, these liners must be covered with water or some other fill material such as soil, sand, or rocks to protect them from harmful UV rays. However, our laminated liner does not require such covering, as it can remain exposed to direct sunlight and still qualify for a 20-year warranty. Moreover, the clear coating serves other purposes as well. In our tests, we found that it also improves the liner's reliability as a waterproof membrane. The hydrostatic resistance is increased, and the clear coating strengthens the liner during excessive folding, making it more resilient to installation stresses.

The laminated liner comes with a 20-year warranty when directly exposed to the sun. To fully avail of this warranty, ensure that you install the liner with the laminated side (the smoother, shiny side) facing up towards the sun. However, to extend the liner's lifespan even further, it is recommended to cover it with water, soil, rocks, or any other material that can protect it from UV damage over time.

2. Premium Plus - 30 mil EIA

EP Premium PLUS Liner is a 30 mil EIA liner made in North America. It offers many of the benefits of the Premium RPE liner mentioned above, with some significant upgrades. Firstly, the Premium Plus EIA liner is even stronger than RPE, with an increased puncture resistance from 175lbs up to 275 lbs (according to ASTM test D4833). Additionally, although Premium Plus is roughly twice the weight of the Premium RPE liner, it still weighs approximately two-thirds of a traditional EPDM rubber liner, making it easier to move, handle, and install than EPDM rubber. Similar to the Premium RPE liner, the Premium Plus EIA liner carries excellent UV resistance and comes with a 20-year warranty even when left uncovered and exposed to direct sunlight.

Arguably the most crucial difference between Premium Plus EIA and RPE is flexibility. While neither liner stretches, Premium Plus EIA is much more pliable, making it easier to fold around shelves, corners, and bends.

Which Liner Should You Use?

If budget is not a concern, then the Premium Plus EIA liner is the best pond liner that money can buy on the market today. It is incredibly strong, UV resistant, and still has excellent flexibility.

On the other hand, the Premium Liner RPE provides you with a strong, lighter-weight liner, resulting in weight savings when moving or shipping. However, due to the liner's construction, it is slightly stiffer to work with. Although it can still be folded during installation like any liner, it will not fold as easily as the Premium Plus EIA. Therefore, it is ideal for more open applications with fewer complicated folding/pleating requirements.

The Premium RPE Liner has a 20 year warranty when directly exposed to the sun. In order to take full advantage of this, please ensure you install the laminated side (the smoother, shiny side) up towards the sun. With the Premium Plus liner, there is no difference between the two sides.

More about Premium RPE Liners

Why do we call it 'Premium Liner'? Both flavors of our Premium liners are made by North American companies using only the finest raw materials. Consequently, Everything Ponds Premium Liners are one of the first pond liners in the industry to receive an NSF-61 rating, the highest possible rating a liner can receive. This rating makes it suitable for holding human drinking water and for use in organic farming situations. It is guaranteed that no harmful chemicals will leach out of the liner into the water, as is the case with some other types of liners, or cheaper RPE liners made in foreign countries. If you want only the best for your fish and plants, then this liner is the right choice for you.

Additionally, Premium Liners are more UV-resistant than other liners on the market. We have noticed that some liners, such as PVC liners, break down quickly with too much sun exposure. Everything Ponds Premium Liners come with a 20-year warranty, even when exposed to direct sunlight.

RPE Pond Liner vs. EPDM Rubber Liner

UV Resistance

With our regular RPE liners, we guarantee a lifespan of at least 20 years as long as the liner is covered with water or some form of fill or protective layer. If a liner is taken care of, its lifespan can typically reach 30 to 40 years. However, with the Premium Liners listed on this page, the 20-year warranty is available even when exposed to full-time sunlight, with nothing covering the liner.

Warranty Information

Everything Ponds Premium Liner is warranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship for 20 years from the day of purchase.  This includes the ability of the liner to withstand normal weathering and environmental degradation when used as a primary containment membrane holding water.  There are a few limitations however for the warranty to be valid: The warranty is not covered against damage resulting from acts of god, or catastrophic events such as earthquakes, tornadoes, or hurricanes.  The liner is also not covered against punctures or damage resulting from improper installation, or use.  Examples of improper installation or use include damage by machinery or other equipment, people, animals, ice, or sharp/rough objects in the soil or substrate.

Covering the Pond Liner

After laying down the liner and conforming it to the bottom of the pond, it is a good idea to cover the liner to give the pond a natural look and to protect it from long-term UV exposure. For a pond with vertical walls, we will often stack rocks to create an underwater rock wall around the edge. The top of the wall can extend slightly above the water level, providing a nice rim around the pond. For larger ponds or lakes with a sloping bottom towards the deepest area in the middle, we usually place a strip of geotextile fabric around the entire perimeter of the pond. The fabric provides grip and protection when laying down a fill layer next. The fill material can be anything such as sand, clean gravel, or nice rocks. The main idea is to add some fill to hide the liner and give the pond a more natural appearance. If the pond's slope is steeper than 6 to 1, the geotextile is essential to keep the fill material from sliding down the slippery liner.

There are various ways to detail the edges of a large pond. Scroll down to see a few ideas we commonly use.

Packaging and Installation

All our RPE liners are initially manufactured in long rolls that are 12 feet wide. In the case of the Premium Plus EIA liner, they are 8' wide. To create a specific liner size, we heat-weld two or more liner sheets together, producing high-quality heat-welded seams in the liner. These heat-welded seams are guaranteed not to leak and carry our full warranty, like the rest of the liner. Liners weighing less than 145 lb. are packaged into a box and shipped via UPS ground, which takes between 2 to 6 business days depending on your location in the USA. Anything larger is shipped on a pallet via freight truck.

The liner comes packaged in a roll. The first step in installation is to place the liner in one corner of the pond so that you can unroll it in the long direction of the pond. For example, for a 60' x 30' pond, the long direction will be the 60' edge. After unrolling, the liner is accordion stacked, which means you can grab the top edge of the liner and pull it across the width of the pond. For every 12 feet of liner, it helps to have one person helping to pull. So, for a 48-foot long liner, you would want to have at least 4 or 5 people to help pull the liner across the width. If you are dealing with a very large, heavy liner, such as one over 150 feet, you may want to unroll the liner down the middle of the pond instead of the edge. This way, you have less material to pull across the width since you would only have to pull the liner across half the width at a time. We have installed liners up to 250' x 250' using this method.

Once the liner is loosely laid over the pond excavation, you can begin smoothing the liner down to get it lying as flat as possible. This may involve folding and pleating the liner here and there. Try to leave at least 2 feet around the entire edge so that you can anchor the liner down by either digging an anchor trench or covering it with fill (as shown in the pictures above).

“My project was simple. I needed a dry riverbed in my backyard. It holds water when we have a good rain (New Mexico ? lol ). I can recycle it with a small pump to water plants and shrubs or put the pump in and looks like a running steam.”

- N.Kelly, Idaho, RPE 30mil Laminated

“It took a little finagling but the liner material was pliable enough to fold into those sharp corners with much extra bulk.  We used interlocking textured tread on the bottom since as soon as we started working with the water we realized the bottom was a bit slippery (to be honest we may have installed the liner wrong side up).” - C.Miller, San Francisco, 30mil Laminated
