WHEN TO USE A BOX-WELDED CIRCULAR POND LINER

One of our favorite methods for lining a circular pond or cylindrical water tank is with a 3D shaped drop-in circular pond liner. Our circular drop-in liners are crafted using a technique called box-welding to create custom-sized 3D shapes from reinforced polypropylene liner. This process yields a 3D shaped liner that is exceptionally strong and lightweight, with the added benefit of having no folds or pleats once installed. The absence of folds is particularly crucial for circular shapes, as folding a regular flat liner into a circular shape typically results in numerous folds along the walls of the cylinder.

Also available in rectangular shapes, all our box-welded liners, including the circular pond liner, are made from 'bendable' liner material. This flexibility allows us to fold the liner and fit it into a cardboard box for shipping via UPS with our free ground shipping option. This significantly reduces shipping costs compared to rigid liners like fiberglass, which are typically expensive to ship on a flatbed truck due to their inability to fold. Although the bendable nature of our liner means it is not freestanding, it can easily simulate a rigid liner installation when used as an 'insert' inside a structured frame or directly in the ground.

WHEN TO USE A CIRCULAR POND LINER

We recommend using one of our circular pond liners when you need to line a pond or water tank that is perfectly circular in shape. Traditionally, lining a circular-shaped pond with a flat piece of liner can be challenging due to the numerous folds and pleats required to conform the 2D flat liner into a 3D shape.

However, with a box-welded liner, all you need to do is first prepare your excavation, measure it accurately, and then order the liner in the exact dimensions required. Once you receive the liner, simply unfold it and place it in the hole. Although it may appear a bit wrinkled from packaging, usually, if left in the sun for an hour or two, the wrinkles will smooth out.

SIZES AVAILABLE

Because we use a specific type of machine to heat-weld the liner seams together, there is a limit to how small we can make the liner. The larger the liner, the easier it is for the machine to handle the circle due to the gentle radius. In smaller circles, the machine has to turn the circle more rapidly, which can be challenging. Due to the physics involved in welding two 2D liner pieces into a 3D shape, creating a perfect weld is only possible for circles with a diameter of about 10 feet or more. Liners smaller than 10 feet in diameter may have a few pleats in the seam between the wall and the floor. While this might not be an issue if the aesthetics of the liner aren't a primary concern, for applications where a clean liner install with no folds or pleats is required, it's advisable to build a circle that’s at least 10 feet in diameter if using a box-welded circular pond liner.

FRAMES AND SUPPORTS

With any of our box-welded liners, you’ll need to make sure the liner is fully supported by some kind of frame or structure because the liner is not free-standing. Frames are a little harder to make for a circular pond liner compared to a rectangle, but it’s still possible to do. Wood frames are one popular method. We recommend bending some kind of thin plywood to create a smooth circular surface for the liner to sit against. Other possible building materials include blocks or concrete. It is also possible to support the liner with earth as long as you cut a perfectly sized hole into the ground so that the liner is sitting against compacted dirt walls.
