Difference Between the Pro Level Formal Pond Kits and our Regular Formal Pond Kits
The pro level Formal Pond Kits from Everything Ponds include a few upgraded components when compared to our regular formal kits. For the medium to large formal kits, the upgrades include a fantastic Aqua Ultraviolet Bio Filter, an Aqua Ultraviolet UV Clarifier, a fish-safe Helix skimmer and a selection of startup water treatments to get your pond started on the right foot. The Aqua Ultraviolet filters and UV clarifiers are simply fantastic pieces of equipment and are a significant upgrade when it comes to pond filtration. When would the upgrade be justified? If keeping fish in your pond, especially koi, the Aqua UV equipment will definitely improve water quality and clarity. For Goldfish you could potentially go with either the basic kit or the pro kit. However, for koi we'd strongly recommend using the pro kit due to koi being slightly more picky than goldfish when it comes to water quality.
Formal Pond Kit
Other than a liner, the Everything Ponds Formal Pond Kit contains everything else you need to build a healthy, ecosystem-based formal pond. What is a formal pond? Formal style ponds and water gardens are usually more “formal” in regard to shape, uniformity and size. The goal isn’t to make the pond look natural, but to create a water feature with clean lines and an obvious symmetry. An example might be a rectangular, above-ground, Japanese style water garden. Features might include:
- Uniform shapes like rectangular, square or circular
- Often built above ground slightly, but can be in-ground as well.
- Often built into man-made structures like decks, patios or walkways in formal gardens
To complement the formal style, we've included an Atlantic Water Gardens Colorfalls waterfall unit, which is a great piece of equipment for a formal pond. It provides a nice clean fall of water that is usually built into some kind of retaining wall next to the pond. The waterfall unit comes complete with lights for a great nighttime ambiance.
We recommend a minimum depth of 24" for a healthy ecosystem pond. If keeping fish, we recommend at least part of the pond be 36" or deeper so your fish can evade predators. Your fish will thank you for it! If you're thinking about having a more advanced fish like koi in your pond, you may want to consider our pro-level formal pond kit.
Pond Sizing
The equipment in this kit is designed for a pond 1200 to 2000 gallons. With a 2' high waterfall, the pump will put out about 2000 gallons per hour through the filter and out the waterfall. If the waterfall height off the surface of the pond is increased, then the pump flow rate will decrease. For the technically inclined, this pond system will include about 12.5' of head pressure after taking into account the 2' waterfall and pressurized filter.
Kit Equipment
We know it can be confusing trying to sort through all the various types of pond equipment available. All our pond kits are designed to make choosing and purchasing pond equipment as painless as possible. Each piece of equipment in the kit has been hand-picked by a pond expert specifically for the size of pond you want to build. While many other kits out there try to lock you into a certain size, depth and waterfall height, we try to make our kits flexible to allow you some artistic freedom when designing your pond. Want to make your pond a little deeper for keeping fish? No problem, just use our Volume to Dimensions Wizard to see what dimension of pond you can build for a given depth. Looking to make your pond just a little bigger or smaller than the particular size on this page? That's easy as well; just choose a slightly larger or smaller kit from the many options we offer.
The Everything Ponds Formal Pond Kits include just about everything you need to create a high-quality formal ecosystem pond - excluding a liner. Standard equipment includes an energy efficient pump, a biological filter with a built-in UV clarifier, a pond skimmer, all necessary PVC pipes and fittings. All chosen equipment is guaranteed to be sized properly to work for the size of pond listed. Ideally, we like to pair this kit with a preformed box-welded liner for a nice clean design, however, any pond liner will work.
What is an Ecosystem Pond?
The basic goal behind an ecosystem pond is to take an otherwise closed body of water and turn it into it’s own thriving mini ‘ecosystem’. In nature, streams and rivers and the resulting pools of water along the way are constantly renewed with fresh, clean water allowing them to support life while flushing toxins away down the stream. Unless you are lucky enough to be blessed with a natural stream or source of water on your property, you won’t have the luxury of a naturally renewing stream. You will have to find another way to keep your pond water clean and free of toxins. This is actually easier than you might think, and is accomplished through proper planning and the selection of appropriate filtration equipment.
Ecosystem ponds rely on a number of different factors to maintain a healthy ecological balance. Things like:
• proper mechanical filtration to remove debris from the pond before it can decay (Pond Skimmer).
• proper biological filtration to convert harmful ammonia into nitrates, which is a source of food for plants)
• effective use of plants to naturally filter the water of nutrients that would otherwise be used to promote algae
• waterfalls and streams to help aerate the water
• natural water additives to promote healthy water conditions
• rocks and gravel in the pond to promote natural biological filtration
