Sequence Pumps

The Sequence pumps are some of our favorite pumps to use on medium to large ponds when the situation calls for an external pump. Sequence is known for making powerful pumps that can reliably pump water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without resting. In addition, they are remarkably energy efficient compared to similarly sized submersible pumps, or even other external pumps.

Powerful

We pull out sequence pumps in situations where we have a medium to high flow rate, or in situations with high head pressure. Because they’re direct drive external pumps, they hold their power well as the head pressure increases. The smallest sequence pump we carry is the 750 series 3600, which will pump 2400 gph at 6’ of head. The largest pump we carry is the Sequence Power Series 18,000 which can put out a whopping 16,500 gph at 10’ of head.

Reliable

Most external pumps are more reliable than a comparably sized submersible. Because submersible pumps are literally submersed in water all the time, they receive a little more wear and tear from the corrosive forces of water. As well, Sequence pumps come with an impressive 3 year warranty direct from the manufacturer, and will last much longer than that if taken care of. In addition, if you do have a problem with a Sequence pump down the road, they are easy to maintain and fix with parts available from Sequence. Some other brands do not design their pumps to be easily serviced, opting to sell a new pump rather than fix an existing one.

Energy Efficient

Energy efficiency is where Sequence pumps really stand out from the crowd. It’s important to realize just how big of a deal energy efficiency is. If a pump costs a little more to purchase up front, but uses half the electricity of comparable pump, the energy savings can add up very quickly. For example, the Shinmaywa 5700 submersible pump is a rock solid submersible pump. But because it’s submersible, it will use quite a bit of power at 567 Watts. The Sequence 4K 5800 will put out the same amount of water at 10’ of head, but will only use 296 Watts. That’s a savings of 271 Watts, or about $23/month in an average electrical market. So as you can see, even if the Sequence cost more to buy up front, there will be savings down the road in running costs.

4) Priming Pots / Strainer Baskets for External Pumps

Sequence Priming Pot / Strainer Basket - priming pots greatly simplify the process of priming an external pump. As well, each unit contains a strainer basket to filter out leaves and other debris from entering the pump. A priming pot is only needed when the pump is placed in a location that is higher in elevation than the pond surface. The priming pot allows the pump and lines to be filled manually with water before beginning operation.

Priming Pots

The one drawback of using any external pump is that the pump must be primed before use. Priming a pump simply means making sure the pump and pipe are full of water first before turning on the pump. A pump can only pump water, not air. Luckily, Sequence makes an excellent priming pot that greatly simplifies the process of priming a pump. The priming pot is connected to the pump, sitting between the intake line and the pump. The lid of the priming pot can be removed so that the pump can be manually filled with water. Of course, a check valve is necessary at the water intake to prevent the water from running backwards in the line as you fill up the priming pot.

Overall, Sequence pumps are a great option when building a new pond or waterfall that need a powerful, energy efficient pump that will give you years of reliable use. To learn more about pumps in general, please see our page on choosing a pond pump.
