The Aqua Ultraviolet Classic Series UV Sterilizers / Clarifiers are high quality pieces of equipment designed to clear murky green pond water in a matter of days.  By using ultraviolet light to kill single-celled algae that causes green pond water, a UV light can have a dramatic effect on your pond, providing crystal clear with a 'polished' look.

This product can be used as either a sterilizer or a clarifier.  The main difference between the two is the strength of the UV light compared to the amount of water in your pond.  As a rule of thumb, use 10W of UV light per 1000 gallons for 'clarification', and 30 watts of UV light per 1000 gallons for 'sterilization'. The basic difference is the strength at which you need the UV sterilizer / clarifier to work at.  Do you have an obvious green water problem that you're having trouble fixing, or a pond that will receive a lot of direct sunlight with no shade?  Then use the unit as a sterilizer.  Do you have an ecosystem pond that's running well, but could use an extra kick to help give you water that 'polished' look?  Then using the unit as a clarifier will be fine. In most ponds, using a UV unit as a clarifier is enough to clear up minor green water problems.  However, it should be noted that Aqua Ultraviolet recommends ponds have partial shade and plant coverage for best results when using their UV units in clarifier mode.

Please keep in mind that UV Clarifiers do not kill string algae.  They only kill single-celled algae that cause green water.  String algae is something different and must be dealt with differently.  See our page on string algae for more info.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a sterilizer and a clarifier?

The main difference between the two is the strength of the UV light compared to the amount of water in your pond.  As a rule of thumb, use 10W of UV light per 1000 gallons for 'clarification', and 30 watts of UV light per 1000 gallons for 'sterilization'.  As a sterilizer, the unit will eliminate green water entirely, no matter what type of pond you operate.  When used as a clarifier, the unit is said to 'control' green water, however it's recommended that ponds have 50% to 70% plant coverage and partial shade to cut down on algae growth.  So the basic difference is the strength at which you need the UV sterilizer / clarifier to work at.  Do you have an obvious green water problem that you're having trouble fixing?  Then use the unit as a sterilizer.  Do you have an ecosystem based water garden that's running well, but could use an extra kick to help give you water that 'polished' look?  Then using the unit as a clarifier will likely be fine.
